I need help with this please. Resolved Question: How do I recharge a water softener pillow for my freshwater aquarium? I had to do two doses of it (my water is insanely hard), but hey..I'm happy it worked at all. The pillow will not change the water hardness. I've tried the salt I already have again, but I doubled the concentration and made sure that it was completely dissolved into the water. I didn't know that you couldn't do harm by upping the salt concentration, so never tried that. I bought a water softener pillow from Petco for my FW tank and it worked wonders the first time around. So, does it *have* to be the specific brand of Doc Wellfish or is something else going on here??P.S. Of course, I figured that's only because the two companies must be linked and they're trying to sell that specific brand only. Thanks. Thanks a bunch, I'm sure my say thank you as well. Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time getting it to recharge. lol I'm glad it was an easy fix!I bought a different brand of aquarium salt (the freshwater kind, not the kind for saltwater aquariums) and tried to recharge the pillow by following the directions, but it does not seem to be working. The 48 hour mark is 9 pm tonight, so hopefully I'll have softer water!Update: The pillow finally worked! :-( You'd think if Petco sold the pillow, they'd sell the salt it requires...I would've tried out Doc Wellfish's by now to see if that was the actual problem, but neither Petco nor PetSmart carries it and I'm having a hard time finding it! I also let it charge for about 9 hours (it only requires 2). The instructions called for the specific brand "Doc Wellfish's Aquarium Salt".

Resolved Question: General hard water?

Posted on December 14, 2008 in Aquarium water softener

My wife can't stand the salty and we don't want to be dependent on bottle water. My question is will the Carbonate Hardness do damage to the boiler and water heater if I by-pass the whole house water softener. My understanding is that General hardness is the one that does the damage. I tested my well water with an Aquarium test kit that measures General Hard Water and Carbonate Hardness separately. The General hardness was minimal, otherwise soft but the Carbonate hardness was high. Resolved Question: Where do you put a water softener pillow in a aquarium? Resolved Question: Where is the best place to buy tropical fish near Sale, Manchester? Pets at Home ones keep dying?

Posted on December 09, 2008 in Fish tanks sales

Thank-youJust to add the silver tips are tetras not sharks - only 5 of them so not overstocked Getting really distressed that our neon tetras keep disappearing and better of the reading I've realized talks about the conditions they are bred and shipped in and how sensitive they are. All tests are a wrap on the tank water (temp, nitrites, nitrates, pH, ammonia, hardness etc) and all are within neon tetra reach yet they still either disappear completely or are organize floating if they've lawful died. So I figure buying from a otherwise shop will succor - anyone got any tips? 60L tank BTW. Originally the silver tips were attacking them but bigger shoal (10) has stopped that.

Resolved Question: Is there a reason why my fish tank can't stay clean for more than 2 weeks?

Posted on November 27, 2008 in Fish tank filters

I just can't figure it out. I've been cleaning my 10 gallon fish tank every 2 weeks for two months now, and I don't understand why it can't stay clean. The only thing I can think of is overcrowding. Here's the info for the tank:-10g aquarium-1 undergravel and 1 regular filterWater Info:-pH: 7.4-Nitrates/Nitrites: Approximately 1 ppm-Ammonia: Approximately .02 ppm-General Hardness: Approximately 85 ppmAnd the fish in the tank:-1 Pearlscale (3 in)-1 Black Moor (3 in)-2 Albino Corycatfish (<1 in)Keep in mind that it doesn't get cloudy, it gets dirty with fish waste.I also feed my fish once a day, which some ppl might think is too much? My father only feeds his Betta once or twice a week so I think this might be too much...Ask for additional info if it is needed.Ah ic, partial water changes. I had done it previously, but now that you bring it up, I find I had forgotten to do them this past week D= *goes to change some water* Fancy goldfish indeed... well if they get as big as you say they do, then I'll just have to give them to our local pet store and focus more on the corys and get a shrimp or something. That should clean things up a bit =)By the by, don't think me cruel, but I did buy the fancy fish knowing they would grow, I just didn't think it would cause so much yuckiness *is shot* o_x Yeah, totally obvious, I deserved that...It's strange that a lot of you say betta's need more food. This betta has lived for more than 2 years now (2 years and 2 months to be exact), as have the other 4 bettas my father has kept. Seeing as betta fish only live to about 2-3 years, this seems pretty good to me?

Resolved Question: Fungal Infection or Whitespot? Plus Fin Nipping?

Posted on November 19, 2008 in Fake fish tank

I regularly rule my water and all things is ok apart from the water hardness in our area which I treat. I have a Black Moor, Fantail and Pearlscale.I originally bought the Black Moor and the Fantail when I first established the tank.I bought the Pearlscale a week ago and now he has a fungal infection, or at least I understand that’s what it is. There are no visible marks on the Pearlscale but I’m frightened he’s going to get hurt which is something I would never allow. Could that and be symptoms of a fungal infection?I bought my Pearlscale not deep after the pet shop had put him in their tanks so he had seven water changes in the space of a couple of hours or subordinate so I’m putting his fungal infection down to that. These neutral spots are bigger and have a ‘blob’ look to them rather than pin head size (I went back to the pet stock after buying my Black Moor and discovered that I bought him with it as all the spare fish were showing signs – was not happy!). Is it for the Pearlscale is poorly and is weaker or is it something that won’t stop? My Pearlscale is rubbing himself against particulars though with rapid fin movement which would indicate whitespot but the ‘blobs’ are bigger. My Fantail doesn’t bother and the Black Moor has never done in it to him so why has he started on the Pearlscale? The nitrate levels are sitting at 1 which I sense at the moment due to adding addition fish to the tank. So, I’m currently treating my Pearlscale for a fungal infection (Interpet – Anti Fungus and Finrot) but now I’ve noticed my Black Moor is fin nipping him. Maybe he’s unfashionable achieving it for longer and caused physical injury to the Pearlscale. The pet shop knew what spare fish I had and I thought they were all fancy fish so they would get on.Please avail me; I yen to get that sorted before the Pearlscale becomes more stressed – if he isn’t already (he is still eating and swimming approximately – which if his condition were whitespot I’d be expecting him to be lying at the bottom homologous the Black Moor did). All eight are in a 60ltr Bi-orb with spurious plants.I fathom what whitespot looks congeneric as unfortunately my Black Moor has suffered from it. Resolved Question: Small Algae Eaters For 5 Gallon Tank? Anyways, so when i took him out about 2 days subsequential there was some green algae and some brown algae on the glass, so i tried used the magnetic scrubber and it took care of it. but now it is all past the tank glass and on the decor and fictitious plants. It is spreading compatible wildfire, so i wanted to learn what trifling algae eaters can stay petty and go in that tank? I had a 5 gallon tank with a baby pleco (he moved to bigger tank) and i moved the fish out of there and went to a bigger tank, and i put 2 dwarf gouramis 8 neon tetras and 2 african dwarf frogs, i have a really recherché 10 gallon filter by Tetra so im not to worried about overstocking owing to i dont go by the 1 inch rule, i go by the proper filteration. P.S. dont hammer me about stocking, i am very experianced with keeping water clean and i research the chemistry ever and anon week.I was thinking otos but im not unquestioning if the lode i go to has them, but i may be wrong. So any ideas?
